PDF compression: file size versus quality

Understand raster-based PDF compression and its tradeoffs.

Why are some PDFs so large?

A document may contain high-resolution photographs or scanned pages. When images account for most of the size, lowering their resolution can sometimes produce a much smaller output.

How this compressor works

This tool rasterizes each page to an optimized JPG image and places those images in a new PDF. It can shrink scans, but the text becomes non-selectable and unsearchable, and small writing may look less sharp.

Choose your resolution

72 DPI may be sufficient for quick review but is rarely ideal for detailed printing. Try 100 or 150 DPI for clearer small text. Some files can grow because the original was already efficiently encoded.

When to use a different method

For digitally created reports, keep your original text-based file or use a text-preserving optimizer. Always compare the file size and readability of both versions before sharing.
